AI Browser Native vs. Sidebar: The Rise and Fall of a Radical UX Paradigm

When The Browser Company CEO Josh Miller announced in late 2024 that the team would stop developing Arc and pivot to a new AI project, the tech world was stunned. The star startup, once hailed as the "Chrome challenger," had attracted millions of productivity-obsessed users between 2022 and 2024 with its radical sidebar design, intelligent tab management, and built-in AI features. Arc was widely seen as the future of browsing. Yet just two years in, Arc entered "maintenance mode" — no new features, security patches only. A bold experiment in AI-native browsing was suddenly on indefinite pause.

Meanwhile, Microsoft Edge's Copilot sidebar — often derided as a "clunky add-on" — quietly amassed over 300 million monthly active AI users worldwide. Chrome's Gemini side panel slipped seamlessly into the daily routines of more than 65% of global browser users. Opera's Aria assistant, Brave's Leo AI, and even QQ Browser's Yuanbao assistant all converged on the same pattern: an AI sidebar bolted onto a conventional browser. The AI browser wars had delivered their verdict. The sidebar model won. The avant-garde native design bowed out.

Two Conflicting Philosophies

Arc's native approach rested on a profound insight: AI should not be a browser add-on — it should be the browser's operating system. In Arc's design philosophy, everything from tab management, to information retrieval, to content summarization, to on-page interactions should be redefined by AI. Arc Max could automatically name tabs, preview summaries on link hover, and even answer questions directly within a page — not through a separate chat window but "dissolved" into the browsing experience itself. The radical nature of this vision lay in its ambition to change how people browse. Vertical tabs, spatial workspace management, AI-driven content organization — all designed to evolve the browser from a "web viewer" into an "information workstation."

By contrast, Microsoft Edge's sidebar route took a fundamentally different path. Edge Copilot is, at its core, "ChatGPT riding on a browser" — it has its own independent panel, understands page context, but does not alter the browser's core interaction model. Users can open or close the sidebar at will; Copilot's presence, at most, adjusts the right edge of the viewport without touching the address bar, tabs, or bookmarks. The underlying logic: AI is an assistant, not the protagonist. Browsers should first and foremost do what browsers do. AI is a bonus.

The Users Have Voted

By July 2026, the data delivered a clear verdict. According to Statcounter, Chrome still commands roughly 65% of the desktop browser market, Edge has climbed to around 14%, and Arc's market share never broke 0.5%. Even among Arc's most passionate user base — Silicon Valley engineers, product managers, designers — its penetration fell well short of the team's initial expectations. Even more telling: many users who "defected" from Arc back to Chrome gave a remarkably consistent reason: "Arc is great, but I kept drifting back to Chrome. Everything is in Chrome — passwords, extensions, muscle memory."

Behind that "muscle memory" lies a deep behavioral truth: the browser is the internet's infrastructure, not a tool that can be casually swapped out. Users' attachment to their browser is stronger than they realize — not a loyalty to a brand, but an addiction to frictionlessness. When users have formed deep muscle memory, any redesign of the core interaction — no matter how intelligent — introduces friction before it yields benefit. The AI sidebar lands perfectly on the sweet spot of this dynamic: it adds a layer of intelligence without changing the browser's core interaction. Users open the sidebar to search, summarize, translate, then close it. It is like a plug-in organ, not a new body that requires relearning how to walk.

Three Critical Mistakes Arc Made

From a product strategy perspective, Arc made three key errors.

First, it overestimated users' patience for novel interaction patterns. Arc's vertical tabs, Spaces, and Command Bar were beautifully designed, but all demanded active learning and adaptation. In the browser world, "no learning required" is itself the biggest selling point.

Second, it underestimated Chrome's ecosystem lock-in. Autofill passwords, browser extensions, cross-device sync, Google account integration — these sticky layers are far harder to dislodge than any UI innovation. Nine out of ten people use Chrome and store their passwords in their Google account. Switching browsers means migrating an entire digital life.

Third, it conflated "AI-native" with "AI-first." AI-native means using AI to define the product's form. AI-first means adding AI capabilities to an existing product. History has repeatedly shown that in consumer software, AI-first incremental evolution has a far higher success rate than AI-native radical reconstruction. ChatGPT started as a conversational interface before gradually seeping into different contexts. Midjourney started as a Discord bot before getting a standalone web interface. Disruptive technologies often land through non-disruptive distribution.

The Sidebar Victory's Deeper Lessons

Edge's Copilot sidebar succeeded not because its AI was the strongest — in fact, Gemini outscores Bing Chat on multiple benchmarks — but because it "doesn't get in the way." Users browse as they always have, glancing right only when they need help. This "on-call but invisible" quality may be the highest form of AI assistance.

Opera Aria offers a further case study. Opera launched "AI Prompts" as early as 2023 — selecting text on any page summons a pop-up AI quick-action menu. This is slightly more "native" than Edge's sidebar but remains fundamentally a "floating" interaction that does not alter the browser's architecture. By late 2025, Opera announced its AI features had surpassed 50 million monthly active users. While the absolute number trails Edge and Chrome, the penetration rate relative to Opera's smaller user base is impressive.

Brave's Leo AI took the privacy route — all AI inference runs locally using on-device models, sidebar interaction, data never leaves the browser. This positioning precisely captured privacy-sensitive users and proved that the sidebar model can accommodate different product values.

China's Parallel Story

China's browser AI war followed a distinct path. QQ Browser fully integrated the Yuanbao assistant, 360 Secure Browser built in a "ZhiNao" sidebar, Sogou Browser launched an AI sidebar. These products were not choosing between "native" and "sidebar" — they were racing to simply "have AI." Get it in first, iterate the form later. Without exception, they all chose the sidebar approach.

Notably, one intriguing counterexample emerged: ByteDance's Doubao app added a built-in browser feature in late 2025 — not a browser with AI added, but an AI app with a browser built in. This "reverse takeover" product logic, while still marginal, hints at a deeper question: if AI agents can autonomously fetch web pages, understand them, and operate on them, does the browser itself risk being deconstructed into a sub-function of AI?

The Endgame Is Unwritten: Another Shuffle in the Agent Era

Although the data as of 2026 shows the sidebar model winning the current round, the story is far from over. With GPT-5.6, Claude, and other models rapidly upgrading their agent capabilities, the very concept of a "browser" is being redefined. If AI agents can book flights, fill out forms, and comparison-shop on your behalf — complex tasks that originally required a human user actively operating a browser — then the browser's role as the "user's interface for web interaction" demands fundamental reconsideration.

In this light, Arc's failure may not have been a directional mistake but a timing mistake. It tried to reinvent the browser in the era of "AI reads web pages," but the real paradigm shift may happen in the era of "AI operates web pages." When that day comes — agents become the primary "users" of the web, and humans shift from "operators" to "supervisors" in the browser — the browser UI will likely be neither a sidebar nor Arc's vertical design, but something we have not yet seen.

The Browser Company's new project remains tightly guarded, but Josh Miller's public statements suggest it may be an "agent-first" browser — not embedding AI into a conventional browser, but redesigning the entire product around AI agent workflows. If that bet proves correct, then the question of "the survival or death of the sidebar model" may just be beginning.
